The Power of Positive Self-Talk: Harnessing Your Inner Voice for Personal Growth

We all face challenges when it comes to setting and reaching our goals. Whether it’s something small like creating a healthier day to day, completing a work task, or something larger like training for a physical endeavor, or achieving a big milestone in life, the road to success can be filled with obstacles. Positive self-talk is one of the most powerful tools we have in our arsenal to help us through these events.

PST (as we like to call it), is the practice of speaking to ourselves in a supportive and encouraging way. It’s about shifting our focus from the negative to the positive and giving ourselves the support and motivation we need to stay on track. While it may sound like a simple concept, positive self-talk can profoundly affect our ability to reach our goals.

“I ran 3025 miles across the USA in 2012 and swear by it. I spent hours and hours and miles and miles alone during that 150+ day stretch. There wasn’t a day that went by where I didn’t repeat in my head some form of the following: “A,B,C,1,2,3…Do, Doing, Done…I am Tougher. I am Always. I will Never Quit…I’m a Tank I’m a Tank I’m a Tank” – That’s what worked for me. That simplified and defined the effort whether it was the first step, the next step, or the last step. The goal and the effort were realized, in part, as a direct result of getting myself amped up even when my body and mind were screaming at eachother.

- Albie Masland, VCP President

Reminding ourselves we’re capable of achieving our goals and we have the power to make things happen helps us focus on what we can do, rather than dwelling on what we can’t. We can use it to keep our spirits up when things get tough and to stay motivated and inspired even when progress seems slow.

Positive self-talk also helps us to stay present in the moment. It can help us stay engaged with the task, rather than worrying about what might happen in the future. We can use it to stay mindful of our progress and to celebrate every small step along the way.

Finally, positive self-talk can help us to stay confident in our ability to reach our goals. It can help us to stay focused on our strengths and to recognize our own self-worth. It can also help us to stay in touch with our inner drive and to keep striving for more.

One last thought to ponder on the topic. Just because you speak to yourself in a supportive way, reward yourself with incentives for progress along the way and take a mindful approach to tackling challenges DOES NOT MEAN DON'T CHALLENGE YOURSELF!!! There is a difference between being aggressive in pursuit and acknowledging when you hit a limit VS justifying your effort as a reason to halt. It is, afterall, A CHALLENGE!!!

Overall, this practice can easily be incorporated into any daily routine, and is an incredibly powerful tool for achieving our goals. So next time you’re feeling stuck or discouraged, try speaking to yourself in a supportive and encouraging way – you’ll be surprised at the results!
